Cordova School Concert Choirs
2009 All West Tennessee Honors Choir Auditions
7th and 8th Grade Students, Only
The auditions are sponsored by the West Tennessee Vocal Music Educators’ Association and open to all students in schools in west Tennessee..
Participation in All West Honors Choir is determined through competitive auditions. Students learn a voice part – soprano, alto, tenor, or bass – to six classically arranged pieces of music. Learning rehearsals begin during regular class time with students eventually attending after school rehearsals for further preparation.
Students are provided a practice CD with their voice parts highlighted and the music accompaniment included.
Students are issued their own music, six copies, upon registration. Students are provided a music folder for their music.
Students are given audition CD’s two weeks prior to their auditions. Audition CD’s are the specific portions of the music from each music selection upon which students will be judged.
Students are entered in the competition for the audition event upon registering with Mr. Wein.
Auditions generally attract 800-1,000 participants. Two hundred students are selected from the auditions. Students win auditions based on their individual scores from their auditions. Auditions are before three to five judges in a private setting.
Auditions take place November 7th, Saturday. Cordova School is the host site for the auditions. Should students have conflicts with attending the auditions at a specific audition time, they may request a morning or afternoon time for their auditions.
Audition winners will be excused from attending school classes, Friday, November 13, to attend a daylong rehearsal with all the other audition winners. There is a Thursday night rehearsal, prior. The conductor for the All West Honors Choir is a renowned musician. Saturday, November 14, is the date for a public performance of the music the students have learned. The site is the Canon Center.
All West winners who make the honors choir several years in a row often benefit with scholarships for college. Making the honors choir is an impressive attachment for students to put on their college applications.
Cost for entering the auditions, for receiving all the materials required for learning the music, and for being officially registered, is $20.
It is a high honor to participate in an Honors Choir. It is an event that will not be forgotten and something always cherished by the student should the student win an audition spot and be selected to the All West Tennessee 2009 Honors Choir.
